Dolly Rebecca Parton
Dolly Rebecca Parton was born on January
19, 1946 in Pittman Center, Tennessee and was raised in Sevierville, Tennessee
to Avie Lee Parton who was a housewife & Robert Lee Parton, a tobacco
farmer. At the age of 12, she began appearing on Knoxville TV and at 13 she was
already recording for an obscure label and performing on the Grand Ole Opry.
She relocated to Nashville in 1964 to begin her country music career after
graduating from high school. She was in love with Carl Dean, who ran an
asphalt-paving company. They got married on May 30 1966 and have remained
together. Porter Wagoner hired her in 1967 to be a part of his show, The Porter
Wagoner Show (1961). She stayed with The Porter Wagoner Show for seven years.
The duets they performed became famous and she was asked to join him on the
Grand Ole Opry. When her 1970 hit "Joshua", reached #1, her fame was
too great to compete with his. In 1974, she toured on her own and recorded
duets alongside him. He was gone and she began her solo career in 1974. Dolly
was a well-known singer/songwriter. Dolly won numerous Country Music
Association awards (1968 1970, 1970 and 1971, 1975, 1976). The petite
(5'0") beauty seemed to be a perfect match for television. By the
mid-1970s, she was appearing regularly on TV specials, talk shows, and before
receiving her own Dolly (1976). Dolly won her first Grammy award in 1977 for
Best Female Country Vocal Performance. Dolly made her film debut in 9 to 5 in
the year 1980. The film received nominations for an Oscar for the song that was
the title in addition to Grammy Awards 2/3: Best Country Song and Best Female
Country Vocal Performance. The movie gained her more recognition for performing
in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (1982) and in Rhinestone (1984) with the
song "Tennessee Homesick Blues". She is the president of Dolly Parton
Enterprises, a 100 million-dollar media empire and in 1986 she launched
Dollywood which is a theme park located in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, in
celebration of her Smoky Mountain upbringing. She was a part of the show Dolly
(1987 television series) as herself. In the episode "Trio" she won
the Best Country Performance Duo or Group with Vocals Grammy in 1988.
